Imagine being stuck in the middle of a highway with your motorcycle showing an empty fuel tank! The distance between the petrol stations on highways is large. This situation might occur to many people in India looking at the humongous population of our country. The conventional systems deployed in the motorcycles have a maximum of five to six levels of bars indicating the fuel level condition. The vague representation of fuel level indicated by bars on the motorcycles have proved to be inefficient. The rider’s approximation about the level of fuel in the tank can be wrong. We have proposed a system that uses image processing techniques to keep the rider informed about his or her fuel tank status. Our system captures images with the help of a 5 megapixel Raspberry Pi camera and further processes them to acquire the desired results. An alert is generated in case of a sudden drop in the fuel level which can happen due to leakage or theft of fuel. The potentiality of the system to work on a real-time basis makes it more favorable. Taking into consideration our system’s portability and performance factor, it can be used in not only detecting the fuel level but also for the detection of oil or water level in tanks.
