Kush Vora
Kush Vora is a Computer Engineering Student, class of 2023, at K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Vidyavihar. Kush’s interest lies in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Full Stack Development and Cloud Computing. He has worked as a research intern under the mentorship of Dr. Ninad Mehendale. During his internship, Kush worked on segmenting exudates from fundus images of patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy (a diabetes complication that affects the eye). Kush and his team designed a residual recurrent U-Net that achieved outstanding results on three benchmark diabetic retinopathy datasets. The developed Residual Recurrent U-Net can be used by ophthalmologists to identify the region of infection and assess the severity of diabetic retinopathy. This project led to a research paper titled ‘A deep learning based approach to segment exudates in retinal fundus images using Recurrent Residual U-Net’. Owing to his interest in the field of Artificial Intelligence, he undertook several other projects under the mentorship of Dr. Ninad such as ‘Breast Tumor Detection from Mammograms’, ‘MRI Scan Denoising Using Image Processing and Deep Learning Techniques’ and ‘Skin Cancer Detection.’
Besides working on research projects, Kush has interned at a number of tech companies. He was selected for the Github Externship Program from over 14,000 applicants and was provided with an opportunity to work with a Github Partner Organization – Symbl.ai. In addition, he also worked as a Software Developer Intern at a Bangalore-based startup, NxtBig Software Labs, where he was the top performer leading an end-to-end software project of data transformation and processing. He also received an extension and a full-time role at the organization.
Kush is enthusiastic to build new things, participating in various hackathons. He was the winner of the HackerBash Hackathon organized by the Computer Society of India - KJSCE. During the 24 hour hackathon, he developed a covid-19 vaccination portal that allows the citizens of India to find the nearest covid-19 vaccination center and book appointments based on the date and availability of vaccinations.
Beyond working committedly in meeting his academic and professional pursuits, Kush took part in several extracurricular activities. He led the annual Google Cloud Program being the Cloud Facilitator at K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering. As a campus facilitator, his role entailed training 200+ students on campus and upskilling them with Google’s cloud infrastructure.
